This paper looks into the importance of reading and literacy to the students of Osun State University, Faculty of education in Nigeria. The research instruments used are questionnaire, oral interview and direct observation. It is revealed that reading plays a significant role in a man’s life and that it is indispensable in the academic arena. The study further shows that students read for various purposes such as relaxation, information, examination, direction and improvement. However, some problems like poor reading habits, obsolete books among others are identified based on the findings. It is therefore recommended among others that the teaching of ‘introduction to library education’
