Teachers' Perception Of The Causes Of Students' Poor Performance In Mathematics In Basic Education Certificate Examination
The study used descriptive survey to explore junior high school (JHS) mathematics teachers’ perceived causes of poor performance in mathematics at the Basic Education Certification Examination. A simple random sample of 158 JHS mathematics teachers was drawn from a population of 212 JHS mathematics teachers in the Bolgatanga Municipality. The study revealed students’ attitudinal factors as the most important causes of poor performance in mathematics. Also, students’ home environment factors were found as the second important causes of poor performance. Next were school environment factors. Pedagogical factors were perceived as least causes of poor performance in mathematics.
