This paper was designed to explore the Nigerian university management system in order to understand how the university operates. The paper aims to discuss the composition of the Nigerian university, with the aim of clearly picturing how and why the Nigerian university operates in a certain way. The paper employs a standard literature approach, as used by a critical realist when in search of the reality of why and how a particular situation occurs in a certain way and not as was assumed. The approach is used to deeply review the past knowledge of researchers in the field, to learn how management runs the system.
