This review paper looked at the concept of desertification and its attendant consequences particularly in states of Northern Nigeria that are neighboring the Sahara desert. Mitigating desert encroachment can be achieved through many ways. One of these ways is the establishment of shelterbelts/windbreaks that will be checking effects of wind erosion through reducing high velocity moving winds that deposit materials on hitherto arable lands. The paper goes on to address shelterbelts and its design especially in efforts towards mitigating desertification citing relevant examples from Borno, Kano and Yobe states of Nigeria.
