An Assessment Of Mangrove Forest Ecosystem For Sustainable Goods And Service Provision, Poverty Alleviation And Climate Change Mitigation In Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria
This study assessed mangrove forest ecosystem for sustainable goods and service provision, poverty alleviation and climate change mitigation in Akwa Ibom State. Remote sensing and geographical information systems techniques were used to determine changes in the distribution of mangrove forest in the area between 1982 and 2003. The study revealed that mangrove forest in the area had decreased in size. This meant that the goods and services provided by this ecosystem also decreased posing a threat to poverty alleviation and climate change mitigation in the area. The study concluded that, a well planned and managed mangrove reforestation programme was necessary.
