The Hmar people, a recognized Scheduled Tribes of India, who belonged to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo group of the Tibeto-Burman, have been scattered throughout North-East India.Hmar society is patrilineal and descent is traced in the male line. The clan called Pahnam is a clear cut division of the tribe, the members of which trace descent from a common ancestors who is also regarded as the progenitor of the clan.
