Levels Of Heavy Metals In Tilapia (oreochromis Niloticus) And Catfish (clarias Gariepinus) Along River Ruiru, Kenya
River Ruiru flows in areas where it is subject to pollutants. It harbors various species of fish which may be contaminated by metals present in wastes. Metals damage fish organs and consuming such fish can be harmful. The objective of the study was to determine the levels of metals in fish. Purposive sampling was applied to collect samples from three sites downstream along the river, past Ruiru town. Control sites were at the upstream sections. Fish were transported to the laboratory and ichthyologists from National Museums of Kenya assisted in identification. Metals were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Gills and liver histopathology were also studied. Metals accumulated
