A study was conducted to establish the role of strategic planning in the sustainability of family owned hotel businesses. Findings from the study show that strategic planning enables hotels to successfully employ competitive strategies that allow them to survive and increase their value over time. Competitor orientation through performance evaluation of customer satisfaction, innovation, employee retention and market share played a key role in the sustainability of the businesses.
