In international rankings, Iranian students collectively score at or near the top on standardized math and science exams. Iran's population in general is almost totally literate in a language of daunting complexity. These accomplishments are a credit to the enterprise of the Iranian as a people and to the effectiveness of their educational system, at least through high school. Given the importance of learning in Iran's economic success, it is perhaps paradoxical that very little credit for the nation's postwar attainments is attributable to the system of higher education.
