The Causes Of Shifting From Sugarcane To Other Crops By Farmers In Butere- Kakamega County
Sugarcane, Saccharum officinarum is a perennial grass of the family Poacea and is primarily cultivated for its juice that is later processed into sugar. For a long time sugarcane production has been a major cash crop for farmers in Kakamega County. The crop in this region is supported by Mumias sugar company (MSC) in all the processes from land preparation, planting, harvesting up to marketing. Farmers in Butere sub County of Kakamega County have for the last two years been shifting from sugarcane production to other alternative crops. A baseline survey was carried out in November 2014 to determine the underlying causes of this shift.
