Vegetative Shoots On Commercial Stumps Of Teak (baikiaea Plurijuga Harms) In The Kalahari Sands Of Zimbawe: Shoot Origin And Survival
A study to assess origin of shoots on stumps of teak was carried out in Gwayi forest in the Kalahari sands of Zimbabwe in 2013 in light of the decline of the species. The objectives of the study were: 1) to assess the percentage of stumps that produce shoots 2), to identify the origins of shoots on these stumps and 3) to establish some factors affecting stump shoot development in teak. The study area consisted of ten plots each plot with 30 randomly selected stumps. Stumps were assessed for the absence, presence and origin of shoots. The study found that 18% of the stumps contributed shoots to the growing stock. Ninety-four per cent (94%) of the shoots came from the root collar.
