Participatory Variety Selection: Farmers Participation In Pigeon Pea (cajanus Cajan L., Millisp.) Genotypes Selection In Southern Tanzania
A participatory genotype/variety selection involving farmers in nine groups in South Eastern Tanzania and researchers from Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) to select superior genotypes is described. Most farmers utilize landraces of pigeon pea which are low yielding and late maturity. Six newly improved pigeon pea genotypes obtained from ICRISAT were planted in each group site as un replicated trials. During cropping season (2013/2014) the genotypes selected by farmers were almost the same as those selected by researchers after analysis. This selection process has identified four superior genotypes from amongst six elite genotypes; namely ICEAP 00540, ICEAP 00554, ICEAP 005
